What is lap analysis?

Lap analysis is the practice of breaking a lap down into its parts — corners, braking zones, straights — and looking at each one to understand where time was gained or lost. Instead of judging a lap by its final number, you examine how that number happened. Done well, it turns a vague sense of "that felt slow" into specific, fixable observations.

Why lap time alone doesn't tell you what to fix

A lap time is a total. It sums up every good and bad decision across the whole lap into one figure, which means it hides exactly the information you need. You might gain a tenth with a great exit and immediately give it back with a late apex two corners later — and the lap time shows neither. To improve, you need to see the parts, not just the total.

What to look for in a lap

When you break a lap down, the same key areas decide most of your time. Here's what each one is and why it matters — the exact technique for improving each is where a driver's judgement comes in.

Braking

Look at where you actually start braking versus where you could, whether the pressure is smooth or spiky, and whether you're locking up. Most importantly, check how far you carry the brake into the corner — braking mistakes rarely show up at the braking point itself; they show up as lost entry speed and a compromised line through the rest of the corner.

Corner entry

Watch how the car behaves as you turn in: does it rotate willingly toward the apex, or push wide (understeer) and force you to add steering? Instability or a correction here almost always traces back to how you released the brake. A clean entry is the foundation for everything that follows, so it's one of the highest-value things to examine.

Apex

Check which point you actually hit and the minimum speed you carried through it. Compare your apex against your faster laps — an early apex often reveals itself as a mid-corner lift or a run-wide on exit. The apex is where entry and exit meet, so a poor one usually explains a slow exit a second or two later.

Throttle

Look at when you get back to power and how smoothly. Are you rolling it on progressively, or stabbing it and provoking wheelspin? The moment you reach full throttle is one of the best single indicators of a good corner — the earlier and cleaner it is, the more speed you carry down the straight.

Corner exit

Examine your line and speed on the way out: did you use the full width of the track, and did you reach full throttle before or after the exit kerb? Because exit speed compounds all the way down the following straight, a small loss here is multiplied — which is why exits are often where the biggest, most repeatable gains hide.

Racing line

Assess whether your line through each corner actually supports the fastest overall lap, not just the fastest single corner. Look especially at corners leading onto straights, where sacrificing a little entry speed for a better exit line usually wins. Comparing your line to a faster reference often reveals where you're taking a tempting but slower path.

Consistency

Look across several laps, not just one. Which corners vary the most from lap to lap? High variation points to a corner you haven't truly mastered — usually a bigger opportunity than a corner you're already nailing every time. Consistent inputs also make every other observation trustworthy.

Comparing laps

One lap on its own tells a story; two laps tell you the truth. Comparing a lap against a faster reference — or against your own best — is where the biggest insights come from, because it turns "am I slow here?" into "I'm losing two tenths at this exact corner compared with my good lap." Comparison is the single most powerful habit in lap analysis.

Understanding repeated mistakes

A one-off error is noise. The same mistake in the same corner, lap after lap, is a pattern — and patterns are what actually hold your times back. Spotting recurring mistakes tells you where deliberate practice will pay off most, rather than chasing whatever went wrong on the last lap.

Corners aren't independent. A poor exit from one corner bleeds speed down the following straight and can compromise your braking and entry into the next corner too.
